The fog-belt reality
What San Francisco’s fog does between visits
San Francisco’s western neighborhoods can carry measurable fog on well over half the days of a typical summer, and a chimney crown under that fog stays wet far longer than the city’s modest rainfall totals would ever suggest, sometimes with zero measurable rain in a given week at all. A crown crack that would sit relatively stable in a drier climate gets far more wet-hours per year to work with here.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District can also call a mandatory ‘Spare the Air’ no-burn alert on any wood-burning fireplace across all nine Bay Area counties during a stagnant winter inversion. That restricts lighting a fire, not having the chimney serviced. A no-burn stretch is often a genuinely convenient time to get a sweep or repair scheduled, since the fireplace is already off-limits for its usual use either way.
